The Run-Down 9-14-09

I've started my job as a CNA (certified nurse assistant), and realized how important being in shape and at a healthy weight is. My first double (8 hour shifts x2), I was literally willing myself out loud to make it to the car. The next day, I worked another double and all the next day, I was in bed with throbbing legs and back, downing anti-inflamatories. And I know it's because weighing 260 lbs at 5'7" takes an extra toll on my body, forget the fact that I'm on my feet for 7 of the 8 hours per shift I work; moving a 6'5" stroke victim or a 300+ lb Hospice resident, and assisting with ADL's (activities of daily living) is an added burden on a failing foundation.

I've been reading about Tosca Reno for quite a while. Now that I'm in my 30s and I know my metabolism, however shaky it may be, is slowing down even more. She lost her weight at 40, roughly the amount I need to loose. She was a mother. I'm a mother.

But the real reason I'm doing the Eat Clean Diet (I'd have named it "Plan", not diet) is because it's simple nutrition- the right combo of lean protein, complex carbs, no processed food along with portion control and eating every 2-3 hours- will work better for me than a plan that makes me count something (calories, points or carb grams) will fail... I know. I was on each one of those types of diets. Many times over since the age of 11. It will also work in my new profession, where I might not be able to sit down for a full meal, but can snack every two hours or so between rounds.

I'm also resolved to switch my thought process about food. Food is fuel, not comfort. I ate when I was a full time homemaker because I got bored. Yes, my hands were (are) full with 2 young children and a house to clean/run, but I was still bored emotionally. But I am kind of a weird emotional eater- I eat more when I'm going through something joyous vs. something depressing or angering.

That's the only part of my weight that I blame on my upbringing. New baby cousin? Big huge (eating) party. Marriage in the family? Big huge (eating) party. Funeral?... You get the picture.

SO. It begins.

As I said, I'm following The Eat Clean Diet by Tosca Reno, walking 3 miles (alternating intensity) most mornings, Yogalates/dance two days a week and calestenics two other days a week. I won't be doing much outside of work Thurday, Fridays and Saturdays because my job in itself is a workout. Sundays are my complete days off (when I get home from my Saturday/Sunday noc shift, that is), and will be devoted to my spiritual life and renewing/recharging for the week.

At the end of the week, I will be posting my Food Tracker sheet and a summary of progress. Monthly I will post my progress pictures, as well as a Summary with my measurements, etc.

My goals:

Weight: 150 (down 100 lbs)
Body Fat: 23-25% (?) (down 38-40 percentage points)
Clothing size: 8/10 (?) (down 10 dress sizes)

Fitness Ultimate Goal
To RUN in the Gate River Run in my hometown of Jacksonville, FL- goal is 2011 River Run (March 2011).

The question marks are because I have no idea what to put. I don't necessarily want to be ripped. I'm perfectly fine with having a little bit of a padded belly... I don't need a six pack.
